My Story
With over 11 years of experience as a professional DJ, I have the skills and expertise to create a unique and personalized musical experience that will entertain and engage guests, keeping them dancing all night long. I have clean and explicit versions of each song, allowing me to play for youth, adults, and mixed audiences. I play multiple genres including: Motown, 70's Funk & Disco, 80's Funk & Freestyle, 80's Hip-Hop & R&B, 90's Hip-Hop & R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B.
What distinguishes me from my DJ'ing peers is that I also have a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from The University of California, Irvine, and I am a senior engineer at one of the largest Bay Area tech companies. At first glance, it may not seem obvious how having a Ph.D. in engineering can benefit a DJ. However, there are several ways in which this background provides me with a unique perspective and an invaluable skillset.
A mechanical engineer must have a proficient understanding of many technical fields, such as physics, mathematics, and mechanics, to design safe, reliable, and high-performing products. Correspondingly, understanding the technical components of a song is vital to creating seamless transitions between tracks. Blending songs requires a deep understanding of music structure, beat count, key, and a precise sense of timing and rhythm. In addition, my engineering background has taught me the science and mathematics behind sound waves, acoustics, and audio equipment. This technical expertise is instrumental in setting up and calibrating sound systems, selecting the appropriate equipment for a particular venue or event, and troubleshooting technical issues that may arise during a performance.
A DJ must be able to think logically, creatively, and quickly to resolve problems and prevent them from amplifying, impacting guests' experience. Similarly, a mechanical engineer uses the same skills to drive products from conceptual design to commercial release. A DJ must be able to read the crowd and adjust accordingly, while a mechanical engineer must be able to troubleshoot and solve unexpected problems that arise during hardware and software tests. Paying attention to the audience is vital. The energy of the guests is essential and reflects the event's atmosphere. Adjusting the music selection accordingly can help keep everyone engaged and having a good time.
Lastly, working in a fast-paced, highly technical industry has taught me that things rarely go exactly as planned and how to correctly pivot when necessary. Likewise, as a DJ, I have faced several unforeseen challenges during an event, such as technical issues, uncooperative guests, and abrupt schedule changes. I responded to these challenges by:

1) Being prepared by having backup equipment, obtaining additional music, and arriving at the venue early to become familiar with the venue's setup to reduce technical issues.

2) Upholding a professional manner, poised demeanor, and a positive attitude to diffuse tense situations and keep the event running smoothly.

3) Being flexible and adapting to changing circumstances or schedules during an event.

4) Maintaining good communication skills and identifying the resources around me who can help me resolve issues during an event. It is important to be in communication with the MC, event coordinator, sound technician, and other staff members during the event.
